BaoFeng introduced the Dual Band UV-5R radio, Dual Display in 2012. Since its introduction, the UV-5R has been hugely successful. The UV-5R has seen 2 major changes since its launch, with the second generation identified by the BFB297 firmware (2nd gen.) In early 2013 and by the modification of the N5R firmware in August 2014.

BaoFeng UV-5R is a compact portable transceiver that provides 4 watts in the frequency range of 136-174 MHz and 400-480 MHz. It is a compact and inexpensive HT that includes a special VHF reception band from 65 to 108 MHz which includes the normal FM broadcast band. Dual clock and dual reception are supported. Get up to 128 channels. Other features include: Wide / narrow band selectable, battery saving function, VOX, DCS / CTCSS coding, key lock and built-in flashlight. The selectable frequency steps include: 2.5, 5, 6.25, 10, 12.5 and 25 kHz. RF power can be selected at 4 or 1 watt. This radio is equipped with SMA-Female antenna, flexible antenna, BL-5 lithium-ion battery (7.4V 1500 mAh (1800mAh label)), belt clip, wrist strap, AC adapter (8.4V 600ma) and drop-in recharge. This radio requires the programming cable FT03 PC03.

VERSATILE RADIO FOR AMATEUR USE
BaoFeng UV-5R is legal for use on amateur frequencies. The UV-5R is capable of transmitting on narrowband (12.5 kHz) and broadband (25 kHz).

Dual Watch receiver
BaoFeng UV-5R has an integrated receiver but can ""watch"" two channels (semi-duplex). Monitor two different frequencies (also on different bands (VHF / UHF)) and the radio will monitor both frequencies giving priority to the first station to receive an incoming call.

FM broadcast station
You can listen to FM broadcast radio, while still monitoring your radio frequencies in the background. Each incoming call will be given priority ensuring that you never miss an important call while listening to the radio.

Group tones supported
BaoFeng UV-5R supports the most common analog tones. Supports CTCSS, DCS and DTMF calling methods. Set your calling methods to call based on group tones. Tone (private line) calling is required by most repeater applications and the UV-5R supports the latest standards

BaoFeng UV-5R can even send DTMF tones. This allows you to send ANI (caller ID) or remote commands that require DTMF tones

You can program BaoFeng UV-5R exactly as you wish. There are 128 programmable memory channels. You can add or remove channels from the scan list using the free computer software. Alphanumeric names can be assigned to channels using a computer. The radio has 2 power levels (maximum 5 watts), which allows you to choose how far you can communicate. VFO limits can be set using the CHIRP software. You can easily program from a PC to configure the radio to work exactly as needed.
